PROJECT: Wessex Down Country House
TYPE: Residential
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed 2017
This substantial new classical residence replaces a former farmhouse and a group of derelict agricultural buildings on a wonderful site in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty. Designed in a classical architectural language, the house is constructed from hand-made brick with finely crafted stone detailing, giving the building a sense of permanence and quiet grandeur.
Internally, the layout has been carefully arranged to make the most of expansive views across the surrounding countryside, with principal rooms orientated to capture natural light and the drama of the landscape. PKA were involved in extensive internal joinery detailing.
A traditional courtyard of outbuildings forms a sheltered arrival sequence and includes garaging for six vehicles along with two independent annexes for guests or extended family.
While classical in style, the house meets rigorous environmental standards. It is highly insulated throughout and heated via a ground source heat pump, discreetly integrating sustainable technologies within a traditional aesthetic.
