PROJECT: Black Barn
TYPE: Residential
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-3
STATUS: Planning
Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this project involves the conversion of a traditional Romney barn into two generous five-bedroom homes, balancing rural character with contemporary living.
The design is led by restraint, retaining the barn’s original form, character, and agricultural identity, with only minimal, carefully placed openings to bring in light and frame views. At the heart of each dwelling is a dramatic open-plan living space, with bedrooms arranged above beneath the barn’s distinctive curved roof, creating a series of intimate yet characterful rooms.
The original agricultural aesthetic is carefully preserved through the use of black corrugated cladding, while the challenges of the existing form are resolved through the strategic insertion of rooflights and internal voids. These interventions draw natural light deep into the plan, enhancing spatial quality and reinforcing a strong sense of volume and connection throughout.
