PROJECT: Old Coach House
TYPE: Residential
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed
This contemporary glazed extension enhances a Grade II listed former coach house, creating a light-filled living space that establishes a seamless connection between the historic building and its surrounding garden. The design introduces a distinctly modern intervention while remaining sensitive to the character and heritage of the original structure.
Slim-frame sliding doors and slender structural columns create a minimal architectural framework, maximising transparency and allowing uninterrupted views across the garden. The expansive glazing draws natural light deep into the interior, blurring the boundary between inside and out and extending the living space into the landscape.
Internally, a warm oak-clad ceiling provides a natural counterpoint to the clean lines of the glazing and the understated structural detailing. An exposed stone wall celebrates the building’s historic fabric, retaining a tangible connection to its past. The contrast between the original masonry and the contemporary materials creates a carefully balanced dialogue between old and new, allowing the extension to feel both distinctly modern and intrinsically connected to the character of the listed coach house.
