PROJECT: Northgate
TYPE: Residential
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed
This project involved the sensitive conversion of a Grade II listed, 17th-century building in the heart of Devizes, from commercial office use into a single dwelling. The proposal removed modern unsympathetic additions and retained and revealed the building’s remaining architectural features. New elements were in a contemporary language allowing the building’s evolution to be understood.
Internally, the layout was reconfigured to create open-plan living accommodation, creating a contemporary home suited to modern living. Externally, traditional repair techniques were employed to preserve the building’s historic fabric, including the use of lime mortar pointing to the facades.
The result is a balance between conservation and contemporary design, giving this historic building a renewed purpose while respecting its architectural significance and contribution to the historic townscape.
