PROJECT: Blacklands Mill
TYPE: Commercial
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed
This project involved the conversion and extensive refurbishment of a Grade II Listed 19th century former water mill and adjoining mill house, transforming the historic buildings into two high quality bespoke holiday lets. The scheme sensitively balances heritage conservation with contemporary design, modern comfort and sustainable performance.
The existing fabric was carefully repaired and adapted, with internal spaces reconfigured to suit the new use. A contemporary oak-framed extension provides additional dining space and takes advantage of views across the mill pond. Its distinct form and natural materials create a clear yet complementary relationship with the historic buildings.
Thermal performance was improved while retaining the character of the listed structures, alongside the introduction of a district biomass heating system to provide renewable heat and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
