PROJECT: The Rowdey Cow
TYPE: Commercial
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed
Named after the adjacent village of Rowde, this farm diversification project combines a micro ice cream factory with a welcoming café.
The design takes inspiration from an existing small farm shed, which houses the ice cream production facility and kitchen. A newly constructed wing accommodates the café and connects to the original shed via a flat-roofed entrance section, creating a clear and inviting arrival point.
The site enjoys spectacular views towards Roundway Hill and features an outdoor play area and paddocks for small animals. Large folding-sliding doors overlooking the play area encourage interaction between the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a welcoming environment for families and visitors.
Sustainability is central to the design. The building is heated by an air source heat pump powered by a roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) array and incorporates a rainwater harvesting system. Combined with exceptionally high levels of insulation, these measures have contributed to the building achieving an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of Grade A.
