PROJECT: The Old School
TYPE: Residential
LOCATION: Wiltshire
SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7
STATUS: Completed 2017
This project involved the transformation and extension of a Grade II Listed Victorian school into a spacious four-bedroom family home.
A previously unsympathetic flat-roofed extension was replaced with a new gabled addition, designed to echo the form of the original school building. The contemporary detailing of the extension provides a striking yet respectful contrast to the historic fabric, creating a clear distinction between old and new. This approach ensures the original architecture remains legible—a principle often supported by Conservation Officers.
A new entrance, topped with a green roof, leads to a reconfigured staircase that improves the flow and circulation throughout the home. The former school hall has been carefully adapted into a dramatic double-height living space, with a new mezzanine level offering additional living accommodation on the first floor.
